Satoshi Kon’s imagery swings from beautiful to terrifying, but it’s always arresting, and the movie is a fantastic exploration of the very thin line between imagination and reality. Gabriel Garcia Marquez ("Gabo") has said in at least one interview that there is no magic in One Hundred Years of Solitude, just realistic events depicted as if they were magical. Neil Gaiman and Stephen King: The Power of Realism in Postmodern Fantasy What would fiction be without at least a little fantasy?

Since Phelan is riding past a cemetery the possibility of metaphor or even of a simple simile is there but after a while the nature of the novel is established (ghosts are always talking to Phelan), and the sentences strikes as a tone setter rather than a simile. When a business on the same street attempts to tear down Daneri’s house in order to expand, Daneri confides in Borges that he cannot lose his house because there is an Aleph in his basement, and he needs it to complete his poem.

Sewer Grate Troll evokes a bunch of specific urban imagery; it's gritty, oily, tough (I mean it gets driven over hundreds of times a day), who knows what vile stuff flows underneath it. It is important not to get carried away by the idea of magic – there are no spells, no witches, no demons. Ultima’s healing continues to be an important theme in Bless Me Ultima and the conflict between Tenorio and Ultima is also a reoccurring conflict in the novel. Heightened awareness of mystery, the story isn’t bound to the rules of conventional exposition and pushes for a heightened state of awareness of life’s hidden meanings.

Over a month has elapsed since Gabriel García Márquez’s passing on April 17th. I think you can begin to see my frustration. Plus, fantasy has had to explicitly wrestle with the nineteenth century’s condemnation of fantasy as “children’s stories”, which historically consigned the genre to critical irrelevance. By telling the story in a serious and natural narrative tone, Garcia Marquez is able to produce a magical realm where everything is possible and believable. Science fiction has power because we believe in the possibilities of science. It was the last Friday of December, and it they hadn’t had a full moon in a year.

It is not about believing in the magic, but rather believing in the possibility of a different reality. Even so, were any of these things to be proved possible, our understanding of how certain aspects of the universe works would need some pretty radical revision, but would still be accomodatible with what we know and understand at present. It takes people of imagination to see the world not just as it is, but as it can be. The withholding of information is particularly evident in The Bumblebee Flies Anyway, where the teen reader wants to believe what he has been told: Barney Snow, sixteen years old, lives in an experimental hospital for the terminally ill because he is to be the norm by which various treatments and medications for the sick are measured.

In other words, Garcia Marquez suggests that the magic text is, paradoxically, more realistic than the realist text.´ ‡ ‡ ³Magical realism--is not a realism to be transfigured by the supplement of a magical perspective, but a reality which is already in and of itself magical or fantastic.´ ‡ ³Rushdie sees 'El realismo magical, magic realism, at least as practiced by [Garcia] Marquez, [as] a development out of Surrealism that expresses a genuinely Third World consciousness. This is especially true of magic realism. Following the success of Gabriel García Márquez, a flood of semi-supernatural sagas was released all over the world – full of omens, prodigies, legendary feats, hallucinatory exaggerations, fairytale motifs, strange coincidences and overdeveloped sense-organs (all accepted placidly by their characters as part of the everyday run of things). Along with the wings, a second possible magical element in "Catwings Return" could be the conversations held between the animals.

Another is the aspect of human nature that causes deception as a defensive device.
